So night before last we apparently had the Mariachi block party going on in the early evening, which was cool. Everyone was happy with it, the musc was decent, and they shut it down around 10:30 -- not too bad for a weeknight. As as result, I had the windows open. I was getting ready for bed about an hour later when I heard a an entirely different set of sounds, however, perhaps best titled a "domestic disturbance." Now, this is not the first time I'd heard this pair of voices. They've been fighting on and off for about a week. I don't know exactly which house they are in, but they aren't afraid to be loud about it. This time was different, however, as a) it was louder, b) the guy didn't just storm off in his car this time and c) it had evidently spilled outside, complete with the loud bashing sound of possible property damage. Preferring to err on the side of caution, I called 911 and reported it.

Now, I'm not so stupid as to go outside to investigate in the middle of a big fight at night with my kids asleep in the house. I will, however, call the cops if it seems needful and sit at my couch, listening. As it turns out, this was probably a good idea. After I called, thing got quiet for a little while before a few more male voices joined the fray. Then there was the sound of pistol fire, cursing, a voice repeated "You goin' to jail for that, man. You goin' to jail" and the woman proceeding to curse at all of them.

That's when the sirens came.

Mass hysteria. Shouts of "It's the police! Police!" among other harried curses. Sirens cut abruptly short. Deep voices yelling "Get down on the ground! Now!" repeatedly. The woman claiming she had a videotape and was going to turn someone in. Cops telling her to get back into the house. Shouting and stuff... lasting for about another hour on and off, though much quieter after about 15 minutes.

All the while, the doggie was alert and listening too, alternating patrolling the windows and putting her head in my lap. I stayed up to make sure they weren't going to come knocking on my door asking for a statement, but they didn't.

I do like this doggie.

But yeah, excitement on my block. Next time I'll make popcorn too. :)
