I went to see Wicked on Friday night. It was very, very good. It is indeed rather different from the book, sparing little more than affectionate glances at the story, plot, setting, and characterization. It's far fluffier and hipper than the book, yet retains the essentials of the story despite changing the story significantly. As I wasn't thrilled with the book's ending, I actually preferred the ending of the musical. It was a little cheesy, but it actually addressed the whole rushed disconnect of Elphaba's fate in the book. I felt the characterization was more solid, in it's own musical-ish way. It was also just a hell of a show, really. I enjoyed myself immensely and am very glad I went to see it. Oh, and I'm adding the soundtrack to my Amazon wish list here sometime soon. :)
