I'm not really one to cast aspersions lightly, and it's possible that they are only idiots in the ways of ice and snow, but...
For at least the past two hours, and I'm tempted to put it up to the last three-four, I've been serenaded by the periodic sounds of engines revving, wheels spinning, and brittle *thunk*ing sounds, both consecutive and concurrent. The people across the street are attempted to leave their domicile and wander out for the evening. Naturally, this would be a heck of a lot easier if their driveway and the street in front of it weren't encased in ice. They seem to be out of rock salt and sand (or else haven't thought of them) and are attempting to break the ice on the ground behind the tires in a desperate attempt at giving them some purchase. Unfortunately, they're revving high enough in their efforts that if the tire does manage to get some traction, it's headed straight across the ice behind it and into my fence (and the car of one of my landlord's friends, parked in front of my fence).
The air is filled with the scent of really hot rubber and fuel, and I'm frankly tired of listening to them. There are times when despite one's best efforts, one should read the signs and give something up as a bad job (or else see what other tools are at your disposal). This is one of those times, man. If it's a health issue, call an ambulance. If you're out of milk, go door-to-door. If it's anything else, it'll wait until morning. Trust me. :)

Flooring his van so his tires were spinning furiously while his son (or wife or friend or something - someone else) _THREW_ the traction strip under the tire. Needless to say, the furiously-spinning tire would grab the traction strip and instantly spit it out the other side, at high velocity. Oh, and need I say that the van would fail to move even an inch during all of this?
They continued this effort for quite some time. It was shocking watching stupidity of that magnitude in action...
