eurydicebound: (lapbook)
I picked the kids up early from school yesterday (it was just a half day). We came home and carved pumpkins, which I forgot to take pics of last night but I'll remedy that this evening. I ended up getting an extra pumpkin for myself, but all they had left were huge ones, so it was a 30 lb. monster (that cost me $1.50). I did manage to carve it, but it was not easy. That sucker had sides over three inches thick. I brought home a pizza and we fixed that for dinner, as I knew if the boys hadn't eaten before we gathered up tons of candy, they never would. :)

By dark, we were out trick-or-treating. We walked the neighborhood and passed tons of kids out and about. There were a surprising number of older ones as well, but all in costume and participating, which was nice. It was a crisp night, but not a "so cold it will freeze any exposed bits off" night. I'd bought some new thermals for the boys to wear under their costumes, and that did the trick without having to resort to bulky coats over their costumes. Alisdair was Jango Fett (Boba to everyone over 20 who knows Star Wars) and Will was a ninja, all in black. We stopped trick-or-treating when their baskets were full, at which point we'd only gone to a fraction of the houses that were open for business in the neighborhood.

Just to interject, when we first moved into this neighborhood, apparently almost no one was trick-or-treating locally. The first year, I got a number of "you're taking them around here?" comments when I announced my plan. Sure enough, though, it worked out well and people were generally pleased, if a bit surprised to see us. They'd bought candy back then but clearly weren't expecting much of anyone. In the years since, though, the neighborhood seems to have changed. Now there were tons of kids around, families out walking together, and plenty of houses participating, many with decorations. It's just really nice to see. :)

So anyway, the kids got tons of candy, setting at once upon a complex system of counting coup while bartering back and forth, trading 1 for 2 or 2 for 3 or straight across depending on type and whether or not it was braces-allowed, etc. It was quite amusing.

Anyway, a good night overall. Good stuff.
