eurydicebound: (off-kilter)
So today (or as this wears on, possibly tomorrow) will be the birthday of my ex's new baby girl. My sons are with their dad this week -- or, more accurately, at their dad's house, since they weren't allowed to be in the waiting room unattended and they couldn't go in Shawn's hospital room, and David was needed to stay with her.

Initially her parents were supposed to be in town for this, but as it happened only her mom could come, so there was no one for the boys to stay with. I'd offered to keep the boys or come get them if things happened quickly, but I hadn't thought it would be for more than overnight. As it happened, I would have needed to miss work today since David didn't have anything else lined up -- and with it being only halfway through my second week on the job after a long unemployment, I frankly really need the money. I'd also been able to pick up some overtime this week, and missing a day would completely wipe that out. So, against my better judgement, I agreed with great trepidation that the boys could stay at David's, with the caveat that they'd have a phone, they would be checked up on regularly, and someone would be there in the evening. I also took my car into work today so that if they needed to call me, they could and I could take off and get to their dad's house in a decent amount of time.

I called at around five in the afternoon to check on them as I hadn't heard from them all day. The conversation went thusly:

Will: Hey Mom.
Me: Hey there, kiddo. How are you?
Will: We're fine.
Me: Everything going okay?
Will: It's great. No worries.
Me: So has Dad been checking on you?
Will: Yes, we're fine.
Will: Mom, I want you to know that it's okay for you to be concerned.

*cue me overcome by laughter*

God help me, but my sons are good kids. Apparently they've learned how to be both incredibly blunt and yet emotionally supportive. Hoo boy. *grin*

This evening I got out of work on time for the first time this week. After having my concerns very professionally mollified by my son (see previous post), I went to the Columbia City Farmer's Market for the first time this year. I bought... well, more than I should have, I'm sure. Bing cherries, fresh asparagus, salmon, salmon sausage (!), vanilla wildflower honey (with a whole vanilla bean in the jar), raspberry pepper jam, lavender jelly, and hard cider. I did not get flowers, or more veggies (probably a bad call on my part), or tomatoes, or fresh bread, or baked goods. I also did not leave myself enough to get on the bus tomorrow.... damn. Oops. Stupid bus. I have to say, though, those jams and jellies were freaking amazing. And so was the honey. Oh, and the goat's milk chevre with herbs de provence and goat's milk havarti.... sigh. So freaking good, though.

Upon getting home, I finished the corrections to my essay for the upcoming Family Games 100, the sequel to Hobby Games 100 and sent it off. I'm really pretty pleased with my essay for that book. I encourage everyone to purchase at least one and read it for themselves. :)

I also fixed dinner, answered some other email, did some laundry, and figured out what I'm working on for a short story I'm writing. I'm probably going to get some more work done on that tonight before bed too. I've still got more on my list to get to, but I'm making progress and that feels good. I'm well pleased, overall.
