Ice Cream!
Jul. 25th, 2009 07:45 pmI heard through the grapevine that there was a nice ice cream store in Columbia City, so in the midst of all the OMGHOT going on today, I took the kids and we embarked upon an ice cream quest.
Tucked off into a small shopping center just south of Columbia City proper, there is Full Tilt Ice Cream. They don't have a proper sign yet and things inside still look a bit unsettled (they've only been open since Thursday), but the ice cream was real. Tasted flavors include coconut, ube (a type of yam), Mexican chocolate (cinnamon-spiced chocolate), birthday cake, and mint chocolate chip. The ube flavor is apparently their most popular right now -- a brilliant light purple ice cream and my youngest's choice shockingly enough -- although I enjoyed it as well. Full Tilt also includes three pinball machines in excellent working order, Pole Position, Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Centipede, and the original Star Wars arcade game. They also sell Pokemon cards, old-fashioned candy, Mexican cokes, paletas, and polyhedral dice (!?!).
They had some other flavors advertised that they didn't actually have out at that time, so I look forward to going back and sampling some more. It wasn't the best ice cream I've had in town -- there are other specialty shops that reach higher foodie heights. But it was the first of the specialty shops that I could take my kids to and know they'd find both something familiar and something they hadn't tried before, and it was the only one where we could spend a couple dollars in quarters and amuse ourselves playing pinball for a few minutes. Business looked good while we were there, so I'm optimistic that in six months or so, the wrinkles will be smoothed out and it'll be a Columbia City destination. :)
As it is, I'm informed by my kids that they want to go back next week. Guess it's a plan.
