Well, I'm still having more soda than I ought to (like any) and I've not succeeded in cutting sugar too terribly well thus far (though somewhat, at least in the sense of general carbs and in moving what sugar consumption I do have up in the day), but I'm still making progress. As of this morning, I'm back down the 2 pounds and change that I'd crept up -- and I know 2 lbs is flux weight as much as anything else, but my size 16 jeans, which were a skoshi bit tight, are back to comfortable again. If I keep it up, I should continue to see progress. Yay me. :)
I need to get back to exercising again. I need to get back to the gym. I need to get serious about cutting out soda again. I think, however, that I'm going to give myself a break on the soda quitting until after GenCon, because honestly... well, it's not going to last through the trip/con anyway. The airplane ride alone with sink me. I'll keep it in check for now as much as I can and try to limit what I have so it won't be too hard to quit, but I'm doing that anyway.
Oh, and oatmeal brownies are awesome. I think I want to tweak the recipe a bit and put some more oats in it, and it would be interesting to try making them without using refined white sugar/using less refined white sugar/ changing over to a more South Beach friendly sweetener, but I think I can do it. More experimentation is evidently called for, AND I'm getting the cooking bug again. Go me. That'll be super helpful moving forward.
Also, go me for making a pan of brownies and not having the desire to have more than one in a serving. I rock.

Date: 2009-08-07 05:11 pm (UTC)From:I hear you with the futility of dealing with a healthy diet at GenCon. I want to try to be better this year, but I get wrapped up in the 'holiday' aspect of it (it's only once a year, it's a treat, it's fun!) along with the convenience aspect of it (which explains the vast number of calories that I suck down at Starbucks).
What soda do you normally drink? What is it that satisfies you about it? I've never been a soda drinker, but coffee is my issue. It's not the caffeine, but flavour, mouth feel, the ritual of it all. Though the caffeine helps too. :) The only think I've found that works as a somewhat substitute is roasted dandelion root tea, of all things...

Date: 2009-08-07 07:23 pm (UTC)From:Coke I tend to use to self-medicate for attention, so it's both the sugar and the caffeine. Unfortunately it also spikes my blood pressure, which is an unfortunate side effect.
I find when it comes down to it that I can cut out the caffeine. I can even cut out the sugar, although that takes a more concerted effort. Interestingly enough, only drinking sodas with HFCS give me cravings like that. I suspect I have a low-level allergy to corn in general given the side effects when I consume it, and that can equate to cravings as well. Sugar cane-based sodas don't have the same effect on me.
What I can't cut and replace with something else is the bubbles. I need the fizzy drinks. Most of the time, I keep sparkling water at home to satisfy that urge and it works very well. I just don't have any at work, where I need to have a more focused attention span than I normally do... and thus the addiction is reborn.
I will be able to cut it out again. There's just no point in doing the work before I'm going to be away for a week, when I'll be running around and low on energy and wanting to self-medicate anyway.
