I am so far behind.
Okay, so, to start with, I am at Matt's house with Matt and Heather and their kids. This has thus far been an amazingly smooth transition, though I'm having to get used to being around younger children again. My stuff is safely ensconsed in his garage, some of my immediate stuff is down in the basement (including this awesome one-cup coffeemaker that my friend Jason and his wife Heather sent to me, for which I owe them a thank-you card at the least. Thank you so much, guys). I still have almost no cell reception except when I go out, which I'll be doing more often now -- I owe people phone calls and such. I'll be Skyping with the kids tomorrow, and I'm really looking forward to that too.
I think previous posts covered that the trip itself went well -- it really did. We had awesome food, discovered really cool little towns throughout the west (Coeur d'Alene, Bozeman, and Rapid City (Home of Presidents!)). The awesome food came as something of a surprise to me, as left to my own devices I'd likely have eaten fast food most of the way, but Matt has a gift for finding good food in unexpected locales, apparently. It's an excellent superpower to have on a road trip, let me tell you. The car ran wonderfully and well, and we managed it in good time.
I have absolutely no complaints about ABF Upack, btw. They did what they said they would do, and apart from one small hiccup which worked in my favor timewise, they did it when they said they would, as well. The driver who came up to pick up the trailer from Matt's house was evidently of a ninja moving clan, for he did it so stealthily that not even the dogs barked when he pulled up and hitched the thing up, let alone drove off. I had little enough stuff that Matt and I were able to unload it with the help of a friend, Sarah, who was kind enough to provide the assist despite only really meeting me that day. She's going to be moving soon, so I will help her out as well. I predict the beginnings of a beautiful friendship. :)
It's been a really busy couple of weeks so far -- I wasn't here for more than a few days before we went to Origins (which gets its own post) and now I'm back, only to have Matt and Heather leave this weekend for a week in North Carolina with his family. I worked my first shift in nearly a month today, and I can report that the world of online moderation has changed not one whit since the beginning of June.
I did something to strain my hand or wrist or thumb or some combination thereof, but its getting better. Heather lent me a wrist wrap thingy for it, and that has seemed to help it with the resting. I've also been trying to stay away from typing, and that helps too.
Oh, and on the matter of dogs, Rosie is doing well. She instigated dominance stuff with Leo (the lower status of Matt's two dogs) almost at once upon arrival to our horror and dismay. That seems to have been sorted out for the most part, though we still watch them when they're all out at the same time. The less predictable issue is that Rosie's become fascinated with Matt's cats, wherein "fascination" means "wants to have them in her mouth." This is less than desirable and has led to Rosie spending more time in her crate when in the house than the other dogs, just because unless someone is watching her the whole time, she'll start cat hunting. I feel very guilty about this, but there's not much I can do about it yet. I need to start taking her for walks, just her and I. I'll have to do that tomorrow.
Factually, I think that's mostly it, except to say... I'm really glad to be here. I miss my kids like crazy and I don't feel like Cleveland's home yet, and I have odd waves of homesickness hit me at odd times... but I'm oddly content beneath it all, too, and being with Matt is like coming home. The unsettled bits will settle, and the parts that are already in place will give shape to the rest. I miss all my Seattle friends, but things are good here and I'm happy about where I am. Everything else is just noise on the line.
