So, Run Lola Run was amazing and a blast and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Following that was Letter From an Unknown Woman, a 1940s hollywood "woman's movie" starring Louis Jordan and Joan Fontaine, which is oddly now only available from a Korean distributor. Bizarre. Anyway, it was good, though way more complex than I was expecting and weirdly disjointed in places as a result, not to mention the odd sort of symptomatic levels of meaning about realtionships and gender roles from 1940, projected onto (or interpreted from) Vienna in 1900. Max Ophuls (sp?) was the director. Worth seeing.

After that, no movies for the next couple of weeks! Yay! Of course, this is offset by having to watch five movies out of class and write a paper about one of them. The list is Chinatown (already seen twice), Rebel Without a Cause, Metropolis, The Story of Qui Ju, and Welcome to the Dollhouse.

I watched Metropolis last week. It was interesting. Granted, at least through the first half of the movie, it was interesting because Matt and I were offering commentary and dialogue MST3K fashion to keep ourselves involved. "Mmm, frumpy!" was one of the more memorable lines. :) I had to work to stay involved with it, not because it was bad, but because there's a pretty big cultural gulf there anymore. That said, I enjoyed watching it, even if I wouldn't rush out to do so again.

This week we watched Rebel Without a Cause. I honestly wasn't expecting to like this movie as much as I did. Granted, pretty much every scene has been done and redone somewhere else by now, so it's hard to get a clear, unbiased view of this film anymore. That said... there's something about it. The level to which sexual and gender issues played into this film astonished me, especially because while it may not have been obvious to the viewers of the time, it pretty much screams it now. And the color red.... good heavens, the things you can do in this film with that line of discussion. This is the one I'm going to write the short paper about, and I suspect it'll be the scene of the argument with his dad. Maybe the fight outside the observatory... or there was one other I had my eye on but I can't remember. I'll figure it out. Really good movie, though.

The Story of Qui Ju is on tap as soon as I get some things watched and returned, followed by Welcome to the Dollhouse. I don't really want to see it, but for form's sake (and the possible quiz) I'll get through it. When we get back from fall break, it's Citizen Kane!
