There is nothing like just drifting off to sleep only to have your youngest child appear in your doorway, crying and covered in vomit--and thank God that there isn't, too. Ick. Cue full-on mommy mode. We got Will cleaned up, got his bed cleaned up (because naturally he threw up in his bed), got the coverings off and in the washer, got the carpet scrubbed, got the mattress scrubbed, got a temp bed made on the newly cleaned couch (please, God, be kind to me... vomit doesn't come out of white slipcovers...), appropriate washable stuffed animal placed in said bed, large stainless steel bowl at the ready, and me washed too. I don't think I smell of vomit anymore, but then there's a faint aura of it in the house now, so there's not much to be done. Airing out and febreeze will take care of the rest tomorrow.
We ran a second bath for Will and got him cleaned up. Poor little guy nearly felll asleep in the tub. He said he was still feeling a bit sick during, though, and sure enough right after he got out of the tub, he threw up again (this time in the toilet, praise be). He said his stomach felt a bit better now. I tucked him in on the couch, rubbed his feet, and now I'm on the computer for a while to make sure he's not about to suddenly throw up again. I told him I'd stay with him for a bit.
I'd say church tomorrow is right out, though. Bleh. And, can I just say that David is extremely lucky, for I have a washer and dryer in the house and he does not. Had this happened on his watch... well, icky.

Date: 2006-05-28 06:09 pm (UTC)From:One of the memories that will stay with me as a father forever is similar. My daughter was fourteen and very sick with a high fever. It was late and we were all in bed. She was sleeping and got up and was in the kitchen drinking water. I heard her rustling around and got up. It was late and I walked in to her room to give her a hug and check on her. She put her head on my shoulder and threw up all over me.
Somehow, and I do not know how, I managed to not gag. I got her in the cool shower and cleaned up, got me cleaned up, and get the floor cleaned up. All of this finished, I again went in to her room to check on her and ended up holding her hair while she puked again into the big steel mixing bowl I had set by her bed.
She looked at me crying after she was done and said, "you are the best Dad in the whole world."
The next four years were very tough for her and I. Now she is going to make me a grandfather in a couple of months. She still tells me I am the best Dad ever, but now her partner gets to hold her hair so I don't have to.
A couple of weeks ago my daughter called me to wish me a happy Mothers' Day. She said that since for a long time I was her mom and her dad that I should get both holidays. She made me cry. Those of you who have kids can probably understand when your children do something so sweet that you just tear up whenever you think about it. That was one of those things, and I am tearing up now.
Being a dad is the hardest thing I have ever done. Had I known just how hard, I wonder if I ever could have done it willingly.
