So, to follow up with Elissa's car having issues, my computer has decided today to stop working completely. The current theory is that the motherboard is fried, but that the harddrive is okay. It would be great if only I had the money to replace the MB right now, which I do not. This means a couple of things:

1) the freelance projects and novel stuff I have are fine, if inaccessible to me. Transferring the HD to whatever new system I have will solve this problem.

2) I was previously running an eMachine, so I can't just sub out the motherboard (bloody useless thing). I have to get a new barebones system at least, though I can theoretically cannibalize it for HD and CD/DVD drives.

3) My credit is sufficiently sucky that I can't run down and get financing for a Dell or iBook or whatever.

4) I therefore must needs hit up those people who owe me money in the hopes that they have it and that I can convince them to give it to me, even if it isn't my turn to be paid yet. In the case of GoO, I'm tempted to use a lead pipe for the hitting up part, but I will abstain. I don't really imagine I'll get an answer, as he still apparently hasn't written to any of his creditors explaining that he's officially out of business yet (certainly not me), but since the only thing it wastes is time and electrons, it can't hurt I suppose.

As a result, I probably won't be around until Monday, and even then only during work unless I get something up and running in the next few days. Just wanted to let people know what was going on. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Thanks.

I may be able to help you out with parts, if you need them. I end up with a lot of bits and pieces, far more than I can ever use.

Thanks, hon. I'll take stock this week and see what my options are.

Oh argh. Mucho sympathies - Caz's dad took pity on us and got us a new hard drive, so our computer works, but it's like we're building from scratch again - all our old stuff is still locked away on the old hard drive. Grrr.

Oh, I know. Backups of important data are impending, trust me.

Beware! I am told that some eMachines use proprietary hard drive formatting that leaves your information only readable on other eMachines, so you may need to arrange to link up with another eMachine to copy your information off to CD-R or USB.

Well, that would really, really suck. Fortunately my ex has one of those also, so if worse comes to worse I can do that, but... blah. Thanks for the warning.

Email me with a shipping address; I think I might be able to help.

Well, I would if I had it, as it was on my old system which is, well, kaput. ladyanaka at comcast dot net will work to reach me during work hours, though.
