Child A:

Gets a 0 on his phonics test today despite the fact that he knows all this stuff backwards and forwards. It's picture day today, you see, and he was all dressed up with his hair spiked and stuff, and he couldn't calm down enough to sit and take the test. So he didn't do anything on it, and thus got a 0. If this weren't one of the things that determined whether he got into 1st grade or not, I wouldn't be so concerned. In addition, his teacher has noticed that he is having problems writing (I'd noticed he wasn't holding his pencil right as well and tried to help him, but evidently not enough), so she wants to have the occupational therapist look at him and see if she can help. Yay.

Second child:

Has an overall good day, but accidently wets his pants at the end of recess. He was just having so much fun, he forgot to go. The kid hasn't done that since he was 2. Oh well. He felt bad about it, and we talked about it some, and I suggested he try to use the bathroom before going to recess to make sure it didn't happen again. He thought about this for a moment, and said, "you're right, mommy." Ah, to have everything be so simple.

Child A:.....

Has he been tested for ADD? I realize this is an over diagnosed condition, but occasionally it realy is the answer. I know they couldn't get me to sit still with duct tape when I was a kid. And my hand writing is /still/ atrocious, despite years of occupational therapy.

Not yet. My brother tested for it, and me, my father, and him are all at least somewhat dyslexic (very little in my case, but don't ask me to tell you my left from right without checking (or to not get bs and ds backwards, or g and q, or p and d... you get the idea). He does have an attention span, and he's normally pretty good about listening in class, so I dunno whether that's it or not. It's not beyond the realm of possibility, though.
