My head hurts. I felt all virtuous today because I was jonesing for soda, so I went and got a 2-liter of Pepsi One (sweetened with Splenda) instead of the real stuff -- which was what I actually wanted. One opthalmic migraine and headache later (not a full-blown one, thank God) + 1 Google search and a thread on Tangency and I've come to find out that there's a number of people for whom Splenda seems to act as a trigger. I seem to be one of them.

See, I've been having these a lot more frequently in the past few months... since I started at MS, really. I thought that was a bit odd, but I hadn't really noticed it -- until, that is, today. See, they've got this sparkling water stuff I really like that I've been using as a soda substitute that's sweetened with -- you guessed it -- Splenda. Add in that I started trying to get off proper soda by using Splenda-sweetened diet sodas as well (and was doing a pretty good job of it too) and suddenly my intake had skyrocketed along with the number of migraines.

Damn. So much for that clever plan.

Eeep! At least you know, now.

I hope things get better soon!

May I suggest VitaminWater, by Glaceau? It is sweetened with crystalline fructose (I.e., natural sugars) and has the benefit of being good for you. I drink it over soda and gatorade, as it keeps me off the 'high fructose corn syrup' that is like crack for your fat cells.

Failing that, 'Hank's Gourmet Root Beer' is made with natural sugars and runs about $15/case around here.

Best of luck!

If the VitaminWater is what I think it is, I'll second that suggestion. They're decently tasty, and you can sometimes get them 10 for $10 at your local chain grocery store.

You could also do worse than buy flavored bottled sparkling waters that have real sugar in them. I know you'd like to cut back on sugar overall, but when you're wanting to get away from caffinated drinks to begin with, these aren't a bad substitution to start with. I drank these, SoBe drinks and the different flavors of Arizona green tea when trying to kick my own massive habit a few years ago.

Same thing happens to me re: aspartame. Not a full-blown headache or anything though, just a slight ick in the head.

Obviously this happened on the weekend, but does the Borg have Jones Cola (do they even still give away soda? It's been so long since I've been there)? Isn't that supposed to all natural (au naturale?)?

Alas, they do not (though they do give away soda still). Jones was sugar-based, then not (at least for the US brands), and is now returning to a sugar-base again.
