Finished the last half of my last final at midnight last night. Managed a polite parting shot in the discussion forums pointing out the incredible folly of the following statement, paraphrased: "I learned from the novel that the Cherokee don't mind poverty as much as white people do."

My work here is done. :)

The novel we read for class is called Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver, and it revolves around a little Cherokee girl who was abandoned, the non-Cherokee woman who took her in and adopted her, and the efforts of the Cherokee tribe to bring her back. A good portion of is set in a fictional town called Heaven in eastern Oklahoma. The town is primarily Cherokee in ethnic background and culture. Most of the whole town is right around the poverty level, but they have a strong community and tribe and pretty much take care of one another -- pretty much your average tiny rural town where everyone knows everyone else sort of thing with an added layer of tribal culture and affiliation on top. The fact that they could be poor and yet not constantly miserable was taken as proof that "Cherokee don't mind poverty as much as white people do."

And no, with context, it still makes no freakin' sense. But anything to help my gentle readers. :)
