Alas and alack
Jul. 6th, 2004 11:17 amMassachusetts is no longer an option. We heard back, and apparently they didn't really want anyone who could program or had work experience, they just wanted someone with an MIS degree who could test things and look pretty. C'est la vie.
In a much delayed report, Origins was pretty cool. I got mixed news from one of my companies, in that a book I worked really hard on is not going to see release after all, but another developer there might have some very interesting work for me in the near future. We'll have to see how that goes. I didn't accomplish a lot in the way of schmoozing, mostly because I had the kids with me. I could get some time away, but I didn't see anyone really work related after the hall was closed, and I could generally only spend about an hour or two downstairs in the Big Bar after the kids had gone to sleep. I did finally get to spend a bit of time with Christopher McGlothlan and his wife, Tanith, and also with
iamnikchick and
pramas as well. I got to see the RPGnet crew, and sit and chat with them for a bit as well. Not nearly as much as I would have liked to, but that's the way these things go. I did get to do a little gaming... an introductory Exalted session, some Savage Worlds (which was a lot of fun, and led me to pick up the Action Deck and Rippers, the miniatures game), and I got to play Warmachine with my husband and
whisper_jeff, and I won! That'll teach 'em to leave the Cygnar shooty army alone until the end.
I got some ideas about my editing schedule for the year from GOO, as well as checking in with Adam and Mark and Jesse and Jeff. I also picked up an old Mac from them, since we were having some technical difficulties. It's a cute little tangerine iMac, and it sits very nicely on my husband's old computer desk. Unfortunately, I can't get the bloody thing to hook up to the internet correctly, so I'm going to have to call tech support and hope they don't look at me blankly when I tell them I have a Mac. Otherwise, if I can't get it connected, I may have to look into upgrading the OS or something, which could start the whole problem over again.
The kids had a great time at Origins, and were generally better than I could have hoped for. We did have a couple of heartattacks involving large crowds and losing line-of-sight, but everything worked out fine. The kids room was great, as were the people who worked there. Phil Brucato went in and did some storytelling that the boys still tell me about a week later, and we picked up one of the games they boys were playing there as well to bring home. Alisdair is addicted to live-action roleplaying chess now (he played it 3 times at the convention), and has been trying to recreate the experience here at home. He also wants very badly to learn chess for himself now, so we're going to have to get a cheap set soon.
We got a lovely bit of swag, including a boffer sword and shield for my youngest, a nice big pack of the Dwarven Forge painted skeleton minis for my oldest, Unearthed Arcana and a couple of nice side items with it, a new Feng Shui supplement from Will Hindmarch, Apples to Apples Jr., and the big splurge of the con, the new Iron Kingdoms Character Guide, from Privateer Press.
In other news, my youngest son has been watching way too much TMNT, because he can now execute a perfect shoulder roll. I am awed and frightened by this all at the same time, and determined to get him into some form of tumbling or gymnastics or martial arts before he finds a way to hurt himself. My oldest son can also do a handstand, inducing similar feelings. My gosh, but they grow up fast. Now maybe I can just get moved somewhere and have the money to do some of this... wouldn't that be nice?
