Self-selecting samples.
Apr. 2nd, 2007 10:22 pmTonight was English 101. My first college class in over a decade. Arguably one of the most pointless classes I will ever have the pleasure of taking. The students are a pretty mixed bunch. There's a couple others who are there due to the demands of bureaucracy, as I am, but mostly these people are here for the first time. We ended up doing a little work with poetry, specifically Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." Everyone had to read aloud, and suddenly I was back in high school again. I'm so used to being in a group, whether in school or work or among my friends, where the level of literacy I have is more or less the baseline for the group. That's defnitely not the case here. I'd like to note that it's not that the people in the class are dumb -- they're, at worst, average. I'm just not used to average. I'm spoiled, I guess, and I think that makes me sad.
