Ripping off the band-aid
May. 27th, 2009 09:30 pmSo my oldest son had a situation last weekend involving a scooter and a lack of coordination, and as a result, he suffered wounds. Managed to seriously take a few layers of skin off right over one hipbone and on his elbow, as well as a bit of bruising and a lesser abrasion on his wrist. Now, these were the sort of abrasions that ooze blood for a while, and at least one of them had to have clothing over it, so I cleaned them up and neosporined the heck out of them and used the requisite number of band-aids to cover the surfaces.
A day or so later, it was time to check the wounds and change the band-aids. I started to peel back the edge, but he freaked out at the owieness of it all. I tried again, and he freaked again. So I stopped, we had a deep breath, and I asked him whether he wanted it slow or fast. He told me it really didn't matter. I pondered this, and nodded. I then asked him whether he wanted a chance to prepare himself... whether he thought it would help. He again said it didn't seem to matter. I nodded my head sagely and said "Okay..." and mid-word ripped all three of the band-aids off together.
There was a few seconds of recovery time and Al gave me the dirtiest look I've ever seen on him, but we got it done. :)
