Mom called....
Dec. 6th, 2010 10:40 pmDad had an angiogram today. Three of his valves had 90-95% blockage. He isn't having chest pains or any other symptoms... to look at him and be around him, he's in great health. Mom is completely freaked out, not the least reason for which being that if Dad has the surgery they want him to have, he'll be in no shape to see me or the boys and will miss our visit.
I told Mom that's the least thing she needs to worry about. We'll schedule our visits as we can; we won't go without seeing each other. The primary thing is Dad and him getting better. The rest will sort itself out, even if it means that Christmas waits until February and the boys' midwinter break. I can go down at the beginning of January to be there if need be, and we'll bring the boys out then. She still wants to see if maybe the surgery can wait until January, but I'd rather she didn't. Frankly, I don't think the surgeon will look at those numbers and be willing to put it off; that's a hell of a risk, symptoms or no.
Dad's not a good candidate for bypass surgery. He has circulation issues, he's had a stroke, and he's on enough different medications to choke a horse. I find it difficult to contemplate the idea that he won't come through it fine, though; I just can't muster up the imagination to become upset about it. That he will come through with flying colors doesn't even seem to be a question in my mind, which makes me feel sort of odd.
Dad's the same age his dad was when Grandad had a bypass, and roughly the same age as when his grandfather died of a heartattack. His brother had heart surgery at about the same age too. This means that there's a good chance I'm looking at it in 25 years as well, give or take, if I don't get my weight down and take care of myself. Fun fun fun.
Anyway, that's my night. We'll see how things go tomorrow. I should have more news then.
