eurydicebound: (Because I Love You)
Here I sit, in a hotel in Plainfield (?) Indiana, just outside of Indianapolis. Tomorrow I'm going to GenCon, but for today... today we're taking a day of rest and relaxation and not really needing to leave our hotel except for dinner. We're using internet and the boys are swimming and there will be games tonight... it's all good.

Matt and I (and sometimes my children) have been driving around Middle America for the past week and a half. We went from Ohio to Oklahoma, down to Arkansas, up along the Mississippi River, and now we're back in Indiana, awaiting our one day at the con.

Things I have seen:

-- Proof that in 1971, people weren't comfortable admitting that FDR was wheelchair-bound (thank you, Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum in Hot Springs) or that we'd had a war since WWII
-- Prairie dogs barking
-- Longhorn cattle meandering across a parking lot
-- Dead and dying towns
-- Bison wandering and grazing
-- Hawks playing with thermals below me
-- Huge granite boulders
-- The Milky Way above
-- Snakes the size of... gosh. My children, maybe? One in width, and the other if you laid them together along with their luggage in length?
-- Lightning striking maybe 200 feet away
-- Gorgeous lake country
-- The Mississippi from the top of the Gateway Arch
-- Kudzu covered fields
-- Parts of Memphis that were not Graceland
-- A dessert place named "Nom Noms"
-- A giant chicken bursting out of a brick wall
-- Matt acting like a kid at athiest Christmas when we walked into a Christian merchandise store to get the only coffee we could find.
-- Elvis flavored ice cream (peanut butter and banana)

Things I have tasted:

-- Cherry wine
-- Peach cider
-- Bacon smoked gouda
-- Barbecue beef sandwich with cole slaw on it (Damn fine bbq, thanks Jim Feely's Interstate Barbecue)
-- half raspberry, half chocolate coconut hazelnut gelato
-- broiled scallops
-- apple curd
-- dark chocolate covered candied orange peel
-- bacon wrapped filet mignon
-- Jeni's dark chocolate/cayenne pepper ice cream
-- Antelope steak
-- Wild boar quesadilla (thank you, Love and War in Texas).
-- Awesome German Potato Salad (thanks, Roehmer's in Muenster, TX)

There were many long and boring and slightly sad or scary bits, but none that were really worth the telling. I've seen all my family and most of the extended family that I'd normally expect to see. I've really enjoyed this trip, and I'm glad to have gotten the opportunity to go (and to bring my family with me). It wouldn't have been half this much fun alone.
