I did a stupid-clever thing this year, in that I took my July checks and went to GenCon. On the one hand, this was clever because I believe it really did advance my career. I can count a number of good upcoming additional jobs I probably would not have had access to had I not gone.

This was stupid, however, because I did not get paid any more money in August. Therefore, my September payments went toward getting the last of my husband's books for school and paying off back bills that I couldn't pay in August (like rent and car payment) because I didn't get any of that money.

I am now out of my September money, except for my husband's travel money for getting back from basic, which has come in (quite handily, as it happens).

So here's my problem. In the last week, one of the brakes on my car has gone from occassional squeaking to grinding, accompanied by a new sound, as though it is never now quite parting company from the wheel as I drive. I can no longer afford to wait to have it fixed, and it will cost in the hundreds of dollars. I am aware of this. I should have had it dealt with sooner, but I didn't realize there was a serious problem before now. I had the brakes done a year ago, and I'd had them checked six months ago only to be told that there was nothing wrong. Still, I've got the money, so that's good.

Then, today I got a letter from my storage place in Chicago. I was a couple of months behind on my payment, but I sent them one month's worth (hopefully timed to get applied before it became three months behind). I missed. Now my stuff is going up for auction at the end of October unless I can get them over $650 by the end of the first week in October, roughly. The payment I sent never got applied, because as soon as it became three months overdue they could no longer take partial payments. I do not have the money to get both brakes and storage taken care of, and I will not be getting my October paychecks until roughly halfway through the month (when I was going to finish catching up on the storage bill).

The kicker to all this is that I have tried no less than 3 separate times to get my stuff out of storage in the year I've moved down here, only to have something (my brother cancelling, truck breaking, managing to injure myself) go wrong each time. Every time I can get the $500-600 together to try to make the fucking trip, something falls apart. And no one else seems to have a freaking problem with this, even though the extra $200 a month would give me that much more to put toward paying my bills and keeping current.

I would even just let them auction the stuff off, but then it means I would have /nothing/ of my own. No furniture. No kitchen stuff. No toys for my children. My wedding rings are still in a box up there somewhere. My books, my music, my sewing stuff, my wedding dress, my photos of my kids.... Everything would be gone. And even worse, whenever we can /finally/ move out of my parents house, I'd have to buy the whole damn lot over again. All at once. I just... I just can't do that.

I know that I'm going to find a way through this. I will talk to my husband when he gets home and we will find a way through it. But dear God, I sure don't see that way right now.

Not much I can say, hon, except I'm hoping that things do work out. I wouldn't want to see you lose your things, either. Hugs to you. Wish I had the money to lend you.

Well, the update is that my mom is floating me the money until my October checks come in. It's not the way I want to do it, as I know this coudl potentially put her in a bind, but as she pointed out, "it's not like you have a huge number of choices here."

I am then going to FIND a way in October to go get my stuff, probably on Fall Break. At this point, a year of rent on the place has nearly covered the replacement value of every freaking thing in there. Enough is enough.

Thanks for the support, though, hon. I really appreciate it.
