Breakfast: Egg McMuffin. Tea. No veggies -- have to fix that in future days, doubtlessly by not getting breakfast out.

Morning snack: More green/mint tea. 1 sea salt/dark chocolate caramel, because really, how could I not?

Lunch: 1 crepe with chicken, emmental swiss cheese, red pepper, green pepper, and spinach.

Afternoon snack: carrots and hummus (and two fudge stripe cookies).

Supper: ham, two oranges, and one ounce of bittersweet chocolate.

Evening snack: pudding cup -- not sugar free, as it seems they've switched to Splenda across all sugar-free pudding cup versions. Argh. 1 small handful (roughly 8) mini marshmallows, for I am weak.

As you can see, I'm back to journaling food and getting back on the South Beach diet. I was supposed to go to the gym today, but I left my gym clothes in the trunk in the parking garage. My bad. Tomorrow will have to do.

Still too much sugar, though my carbs weren't bad today. My head is giving me a pain, though, so I know I didn't have as much as I got used to again. I'll have to adjust accordingly. Buying the chocolate will help, because that's on my diet and cookies are not.

Just curious -- as someone who needs to get on a diet, why did you pick South Beach, and how do you get the info on what to have to eat?

I picked South Beach for a couple of reasons. First, it was designed for heart patients, and my blood pressure's been creeping up. When I got my physical and discovered my sugar was high too, that was enough. Those are the things South Beach was designed to help with, and so that seemed like a good idea. The weight loss was initially secondary (though I needed that too).

Second, my overall diet isn't bad. My problem isn't that I binge or that I take in horrendous amounts of calories. No, my problem is that I was eating way too much sugar and too many carbs, even when I wasn't eating all that much in a given day. South Beach encourages you to eat lean protein, veggies, fruits, and whole grain carbs (though you go without them for the first two weeks). These are the things I knew I needed more of, and what I figured I could maintain.

The nice part is that even when I let things slide a bit, I still didn't abandon the program and gain the weight back. My coke consumption is way, way down (though I do stay pretty vigilant about that). My bread consumption is down as well, though that one is harder to keep track of. My starches are way way down... I'm eating a lot less of potatoes, bread, and pasta than I once did. I eat more veggies than I used to (though not as much as I should be) and more fruit as well. It's just better for me and my body responds to it.

It should be noted... this isn't a diet. This is a lifestyle change. It's not something you do for a while and then get off of. If you approach it that way, it's not going to be of any use to you. It can really make a huge difference in how you feel, though. I recommend it highly.

As to where I got the info, I bought a $14.95 book. :) Most of the book consists of recipes of varying quality, but some people really like them. I've never followed them closely; the food lists and portion sizes got me through sufficiently to make up my own.

This is the book I bought (http://www.amazon.com/South-Beach-Diet-Delicious-Doctor-Designed/dp/0312991193/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231213529&sr=8-3) but there's a newer one now that I'd probably recommend. Either way, it's worth the minimal investment. I've spent a lot more with a lot less result.
