This movie musical goes back to 1953. Story, screenplay, and lyrics are all written by Dr. Seuss. It is an amazing film, although being trapped in a Dr. Seuss world for an hour and a half is a bit harder on the uninitiated (complete with musical numbers and roller skates!) than one might think. It was... not well received at the time, despite the talent that was behind it. People walked out on the Hollywood premiere. It seems that live-action unadulterated Seuss was somehow too much for them, possibly Dr. Seuss included, as Ted Geisel called the finished film a "debaculous fiasco" and cut it from his official biography.

That said... I love Dr. Seuss and I have boys of my own. The movie as a whole takes place mostly within a boy's dream and so, in the nature of dreams, makes fantastic leaps and is nonsensical in places. The thing is, though.... well, it just rocks. You have to approach it with an open mind, though, or there can be mental bruising involved with the experience. Still and all, if you have the opportunity to see it, you should. I admit, one of my sneaky goals is to introduce this my friends to this movie one at a time, because on some level I think everyone should be subjected to it. I'd even like to run a game set in that world, but that would require a lot of buy-in from everyone. :) Still. It's awesome. Go rent it.
