Through an odd whim of fate and my checking account not forbidding it, I'm going to A-Kon this year. It's next weekend, and I'll be working a bit during the con and possibly sitting on a couple of panels. Not sure yet how that'll work out, but we'll see. If anyone's in the area and wants to come, let me know and we could hang out or something. :)

Second, we've had an unexpected local job possibility come up. It seems that the local military base, Fort Sill, wants to hire a couple of programmers in Fire Control and called the university for names. The head of the department gave them David and one other guy. They were originally looking to make them paid internships, but since David isn't a student, they'll see about just hiring him. Dr. T isn't going to be recommending anyone else; as he told David on the phone, "you're the best student in the department." So basically there's no competition for the position, it's entry-level, it's a government job, it's local, he already has a friend who works there that he gets along well with, and it pays 50K a year. Friday we got his transcript and stuff ready, and Tuesday he takes it in and maybe talks to someone.

The downside is that he's already been warned that the government can take a while to move on these things, so even after we turn stuff in, even if it's a done deal, it could still take a month or two before anything's firmly decided one way or the other. I can't drop everything and count on it, regardless of how much I'd like to. It's not that I'd mind moving somewhere further afield, I'd just like to do it in a year or two, when I've got some savings to do it with, most of my small debts are paid off, and when a company will pay for relocation.

Ah well. We'll just have to see.

I wish you could too. It'd be nice to see you and Jane, especially since Origins isn't going to happen.

And actually, we'd be moving to the other side of the border in Texas. It's a commute for him, but a much better school for the kiddos. And with him working in a military job, with some form of security clearance for a couple of years, he'll come out able to make half-again his salary somewhere else, if not more. At that point we could go anywhere we chose, basically. And we'd have time to finish giong through counseling and such, and I could maybe finish my degree... there would just be a lot of positives to staying around here for just a little while longer, only this time in a place of our own and a steady, sizable income.
