Thus far I'm really pleased with my honors course section. Basically, the Honors English track requires that you take two quarters on somewhat eclectic though ostensibly themed topics (this year's overall theme was "Aesthetics and Politics," for example), and then the final quarter you write your honors essay/thesis, a 25-30 pg paper on whatever you want to write about. It's nice if it's in keeping with the overall themes you've explored, but it's really about your interests and passions. In theory it's good for producing an excellent writing sample to send off for grad school apps, but I've done that already so I'm not too invested in that particular outcome. I'm sure there's something else that can be done with these essays, but I'll burn that bridge when I get to it.
My teacher is very interested in being an advisor, and she's setting things up so we can check in and have stuff to bring to keep us on track without assigning material or extra writing that won't actually help us. I've also got a sort of peer study/research group forming to meet outside of class to discuss progress and writing and research and whatnot. It's a good thing.
The downside is that my headache is not a caffeine headache, which I'd been hopeful it was since I was low on caffeine today, and it's persistent. I'll likely have it until I go to bed tonight, which sucks. My next class isn't for another two hours... at least I'll have time to do research and get some writing done at the library. I guess having a bit of built-in study time during school days isn't a bad thing overall. Lord knows it's hard to find the time otherwise -- too many things to do at home, especially now that I'm getting ready to move this summer.
I'm also suddenly reminded that I have a short story to write and some things to review and edit, and I should get on those. Eek. Well, the short story one at least I'm in the right space for -- I've got to do a little back research, but then I'm good. I hope it ends up being the kind of story they're looking for. We'll see.
