So, apparently Al found the ring in our yard, just lying in the dirt. Now, the favorite outdoor pastime of my dog is running back and forth along the street side of the yard fence, digging deeper and deeper into the dirt every time she makes a turn. Her running track has shown us that there was a brick sidewalk there once from the street, buried under the yard. She turns up new rocks with a regularity that is, if not precise, at least reliable. My landlord's already observed that he's going to take out the fence after we leave and fill that end of the yard again.
So given where he found it and how much dirt had to come off of it, it's a fair cop that it was over by that unearthed sidewalk, buried under grass and dirt and rocks. It's probably been here ever since then, however far back that was. Sort of makes me want to rent a metal detector and take a sweep of the yard to see what else is there. :)
