For those interested in a more traditional (and with photos!) recap of our trip, check out Matt's LJ @ [livejournal.com profile] innocent_man.

So, yesterday's signs and portents:

1) A billboard in Spokane that read "Abstinence Works," sponsored by the Teen-Aid foundation. Their slogan was "Building Characters and Families." Which is an unfortunate slogan for a group that's about not having children.
2) Various ominous signs throughout Montana which say "Historical Markers" and that's all. Context, people.
3) When we were trying to decide where to go to dinner in Bozeman, one of the places had a yarn store next to it. That's where we ate. Coincidence? I think not.

Also? John Hodgeman's The Areas of My Expertise audiobook is really, really funny. Slightly awe inspiring and mindblowing at times, but really funny. And there's Jonathan Coulton! You should totally get it for your next "OMG are we still driving???" trip.

We're now in Billings, and we'll be heading out for South Dakota as soon as I finish getting ready. It's been a good morning so far.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot the most ominous sign: a flyer posted at 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar for "Skull Cleaning and Preservation." Because obviously, a tourist trap like that is absolutely the best place to advertise for prospective customers who have skulls they need to have cleaned and preserved.

Gonna hit some sights in South Dakota? Mount Rushmore, Deadwood? If it's like what it was when I was there as a younger man, there'll be places where you can pan for gold and/or purchase some Black Hills gold jewelry.
