Matt wanted to do another of his character creation things tonight, and with OWoD rising from the dead and buried in a number of respects, it seems timely to do Hunter. :)
I admit, I loved the heck out of the Hunter Xbox games. And I enjoyed my work on the franchise, though I never got to play it in tabletop form. It was weird and had this "not fully jelled" feeling to it. I think I would have liked it as a game, but it was sort of "instrument of deus ex machina" in a way I wasn't fully comfortable with. Now, that said, I always felt like they hung a lantern on that part of the setting, and I appreciated that. It doesn't really make it more playable, though -- and I think in the end, that feeling that at the base of everything, somebody was just making shit up and not really even apologizing for not making up more cohesive shit is what made the game eventually develop a conceptual limp as it went along. Well, and that it wasn't Hunters Hunted, which a lot of people had been very much hoping for at the time. Certainly I had as well, and instead we get mysterious powers and voices and.... you can just SEE them, man! I'm down with that and the resulting crazy, but it was a bit out of left field.
Game: Hunter the Reckoning.
Publisher: White Wolf
Books Needed: Well, there was a whole line, but let's say the core and the Player's Guide. I'm not doing splats.
Level of Familiarity: Edited bits of, read, messed around with in video game form.
Concept:
Hmm. So I'm going to say that my girl.... let's call her Lilah. Lilah is a... hmm. Lilah is a massage therapist. She broke up with her ex about nine months ago after dating for two years. She's in her mid-thirties, no kids, and her biological clock is not thrilled with the way she's been hitting the "snooze" button. Her bestie, Raquel, suggested that she try an online site. Given how few single people she knows anymore and how sick she was of bars, she agreed. A few photos later and it was set.
She's had her profile up for a month or so and she's met a couple of guys for coffee. One dropped off the face of the planet afterward, while the second tried to get her to give him a private session as their date. Um, no. Now she's chatted with this new guy for a while and is meeting him for coffee at Bravissimo, a nice coffee place downtown-ish with free parking and good lighting. She's meeting Sam, who's a lineman for the electric company. He's divorced and has a dog and likes outdoorsy things, and he can spell, and he didn't send her a picture of his junk straight off or ask her what the going rate was. Thus far, he's a keeper.
Coffee was going well -- he was clever and trying to be funny and knew what the Internet was. Raquel was off the hook for the life line rescue call. In the midst of coffee, however, a big fuck-off werewolf comes crashing through the window.
Sam takes a handful of cinnamon off the counter and flings it in the creature's face, while Lilah sees the creature flailing back toward someone standing, frozen, and pulls them out of the path before they get crushed by a ton of snarly whatever-it-is. They escape out the back and, grabbed by a sudden what-the-fuck-was-that, they head over to his place and his internet connection to figure out what the hell just happened.
Attributes:
She's mostly a physical kind of gal -- Strength 3, Dex 3, Stamina 3. Charisma 3, Manipulation and Appearance 2. She's got Intelligence 3 and Perception and Wits 2. Yes, I spent freebie points on Charisma.
Abilities:
Talents more than anything else. Alertness 3, Athletics 2, Dodge 2, Empathy 2 (Confidence speciality), Intimidation1, Intuition and Leadership 2. Animal Ken 1, Melee 2, Performance 1, and Technology 2. Finally, Academics 1, Computer 2, Medicine 2 (massage therapy), Research 1, and Science 2 (anatomy).
Edges:
Ward, Focus, and Discern. She can see Them better than others, she can give people Conviction back, and she can protect others against Them.
Backgrounds:
Resources 1, Destiny 2, and Exposure 2
Other Stuff:
Conviction 5, Willpower 5, Zeal 2 and Vision 1.
She and Sam work well together and she likes him. It's too damn bad that whole Imbued thing had to ruin their date. Everyone knows that relationships that start under duress never last. Oh well... at least it'll be fun until they get killed by monsters, and having him know does make her romantic life a lot less complicated.
And we're done! Yay!
