It's a high school meme. Don't blame me, all the cool kids are doing it.

What year was it?
1988

What were your three favorite bands or musical artists?
Def Leppard, Richard Marx, Pet Shop Boys -- Yeah, I was a pop baby. It was that, one dance/R&B station, or listen to the 50 country stations in the area. What would you choose?

What was your favorite outfit?
A boxy cropped black knit shirt with small pink, yellow and purple bows scattered diagonally across the front and a couple of dime size mirrors thrown in as well, and a pair of high-waisted acid-washed overdyed black and grey pants. Oh, and socks to match the bows. And ankle boots.

Wow. I almost wish I hadn't remembered that.

What was up with your hair?
Bangs and long hair down to my waist. I wore it in a ponytail as often as not.

Who were your best friends?
Denise and LaRhonda. Mostly Denise. LaRhonda was a dear girl, but way too damn popular to be anyone's all the time "do everything together" friend.

Where did you work?
I spent a summer working in the local florist's shop (my first job), then volunteered for two years at the county library during the summer.

Did you take the bus?
Drove. Lived a quarter mile from school, but drove anyway. My car was a 78 aqua blue Oldsmobile that was built of iron and literally twice as big as my current car. I think it cost my dad $500 or something.

Who did you have a crush on?
Joe Neely. Damn cute tall lanky guy a class ahead of me. The class clown, but I loved him for it. He was nice to me, and most guys wouldn't even talk to me.

Did you fight with your parents?
No. Well, once with my dad that year, when he freaked out because I was going to the county theater guild party 3 nights in a row during the summer at the end of our play. I was the only one in the play under the age of 25, and all the rest of them were married and owned local businesses and whatnot. I couldn't have been more thoroughly chaperoned if I were chained to a nun. It was completely out of character for me to be out late, though, much less repeatedly, and dad was a wee bit overprotective then. I understood it, but it didn't change my mind.

Did you smoke cigarettes?
No. Dad did enough smoking for all of us.

Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack because you were too nervous to find your locker?
No. It wasn't exactly difficult to find the lockers.

Did you have a 'clique'?
Not that I was informed of. The "smart kids" formed most of my class, oddly enough, but we never hang out together. And even among the smart kids, I didn't fit in.

Did you have "The Max" like Zach, Kelly and Slater?
See, I had to google this to realize that this question came from "Saved by the Bell," a show that was on Saturdays during the late 80s. I had stopped watching TV on Saturday mornings long since and never saw it, and still can't figure out what exactly this was supposed to be. Therefore, I have to answer "no."

Admit it, were you popular?
No. I might have been, actually, if I were dumber or went out of my way to act like it. Hell, this was the year that I'd had boys actually being friendly to me in class, only to turn around and tell people I was trying to "show how smart I was" by helping him with a paper in class when he'd asked me. Fuck that.

Who did you want to be just like?
I didn't have anyone in mind. I wouldn't have minded being Janet Jackson, though.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I still thought I'd be an astronomer. I gave brief thoughts to being a librarian, but my head was still up in the stars.

Where did you think you'd be at the age you are now?
With a graduate degree, married somewhere with kids or something. I didn't really think that far ahead.

A few years in the chorus is nothing to sneeze at, especially considering that most people never do anything of the sort. I guess I think of being involved in a live theatrical production as a really cool experience regardless of one's particular role...there's a certain kind of energy that I really miss, plus all the little incidental logistical details and funny things that happen that people who've never done it wouldn't know about.

I love theatre. I would do it again in a heartbeat, even if I never set foot on stage during a performance. It just sort of ended up being something I gave up once I got to college and got married... that was probably one of the dumbest decisions I ever made, actually.

Well, it is a BIG time commitment. I miss it a lot, too, but I know that if I had stuck with it as much as I did in high school (I did some acting in college, but less and less with each passing year) I would have missed out on a lot of other things. And I imagine that sticking with it while holding down a day job is incredibly difficult.
