Evidently, there's a chance that I might be having to be seen in conjunction with SR4 stuff. The basic problem with this is that, visually speaking, I do NOT fit in given my current wardrobe and look. I think I may need a temp fix for this.

I'm now officially taking suggestions for getting a cooler, SR-worthy look. I am hopeless at hair dyeing and no great shakes with advanced make-up techniques, so anything I'm doing will have to be a) temporary and b) easy to pull off. The tattoo will not even be more than a mental image for at least another year, so that's not an option. Anybody who would like to offer dress-up suggestions and make-up tips, though (and Elissa, I'm looking at you at least in part) would be greatly appreciated. If I start planning now (I've already started getting the bod back in a useful shape) I can pull it off by the end of the summer in style.

Help?

Don't forget that you can always wear a suit and act like a Ms Johnson looking to hire runners. It would certainly fit with the whole SR thing, without being really hard to find an outfit for :)

Wear what you want. You're dressing up as Jane Citizen, the average taxpayer that has heard of Shadowrunners, but lives the normal life. Only very, very rarely will her life be affected by a Shadowrun. Boom, there's your costume. :D

Dreadwig!

You should look like one of those spell-shocked shamans, with the spiky dreads and the funny left eye! A wig and a colored theatrical contact and you're good to go.

Heh. See, the thing is, I'm not going to be a character, I'm going to be me. Possibly signing books. And while I'm cute and all, I am the Poster Child for Midwest Suburban America as compared to the typical gear of the FanPro crew. And actually... yeah, it would be hard to find a suit. At least one I'd like. I have one. It's red. It's cute and all, but it doesn't exactly scream "corporate power." I don't want to look like a mom amid all the cool kids. Looking like a mom AND a cool kid would be appropriate, though, if that's the best we can do. I don't want to overdo it and have my look scream "goth/punk wanna-be." Appropriate touches would be nice, though. So, basically... me, only goth/punk-er. No idea how to do that, though.

I do promise to post pics later, if I can figure out how to pull it all together.

Dude. So I found this thing at Walgreens tonight (needed waterproof bandaids, which is /so/ mom of me) while I was ogling the hair dyes and reminding myself I still haven't made use of the red I've got sitting in the closet.

Anyway, they last like 8 shampoos and come in not-quite-natural shades, so you could either use 'em for the Con, or you could try them out between now and then, so you can try out something funky without it necessarily being permanent. It's L'Oreal Color Pulse, though this link won't take you directly there. But if you click on the "Color Pulse" thing, you'll get there.

(BTW - I so relate on the "how do I look cool but still a mom" thing. While I was buying waterproof bandaids? I also got some lime green nail polish, which I will likely only use on my toenails once. sigh.)

Well, you know, it might be a good thing to have some people who don't look they just stepped out of a club and into the office... :-)

Heh. Yeah, well. I don't think I'll be giving anyone a run for their money. The idea of me dying my hair made Rob laugh, though. :)

Eh, that's what Szeto and Tomasso are for. ;)

Do you have a Hot Topic nearby? They have all sorts of cool punk/goth gewgaws you could use to liven up your wardrobe, and the prices aren't insane, either. A nice pair of platform-soled goth boots paired up with spiked collar/bracelets and black jeans would be a good start. Or how about a nice tribal tattoo done in washable face paint?

I do have one, and I've been looking over the web site. See, time was when if I wanted to find something in Hot Topic that would fit me, I was SO out of luck. It seems they've expanded their range of sizes, though, into something more realistic.

Tell you what: I'll email you tomorrow morning with a bit of help. (I gather you're not going to be at Origins, otherwise, I'd just wait to give advice then.)

Cool. And no, I won't be at Origins. I had planned to originally, but situations have changed.

I'm sorry. We really wanted to go... just that whole divorce thing was kind of more important, and the companies I had been expecting to pay haven't yet and don't expect to be able to before then. We'll have to try for next year.

And the sad thing is I still can't bring myself to cancel my hotel reservation. Sigh.

The whole problem of making see-them-once-a-year friends is that sometimes you don't see them even once in a year. Next year.

And the sad thing is I still can't bring myself to cancel my hotel reservation. Sigh.

You mean you're waiting until about two weeks before the convention to sell the reservation to the highest bidder, right?

Heh.

I have a present for you, though, only I've lost your mailing address. Email it to me, if you would. I think you'll like it.

You might consider Henna for some temporary tattoos. I've gotten henna done a few times, and for the first week or so it looks pretty realistic (provided people aren't studying your tattoos up close).

There are places that do it professionally. I know Chicago has about 10 places, so I'd think Seattle would have a couple at least.
