So, this past weekend, we went to Scarborough Faire south of Dallas (in lovely Waxahatchie, Texas, for those who might be interested). It had been years since I'd been to a Ren Faire, and nearly as long since I'd gone to an SCA event. Still, going to the faire reminded me why I like it all so much.
The kids had a blast, and got to take part in a little comedic street duel skit. They came home with boffer swords and light sunburns and generally had a great time. They've been asking to go back ever since. They rode an elephant and saw the jousts and rode bunches of medieval-ish rides, and had more pretzels than man was meant to consume.
Myself, I actually bought garb at the ren faire. A full set of blouse, underskirt and overskirt, all in washable silk, with a grey tapestry bodice. All told, it cost me about $240. I really wasn't going to buy anything more than a blouse, maybe, when I walked into that store. The problem was that it was all just so nice... and I don't have any garb that would fit me. And given the price of the material, I'd have been hard-pressed to make it for less myself. And there's no way I could have made my own bodice, certainly not one with steel stays.
It is all very cool, and I've been working my ass off lately so I feel like I deserved it. I feel a little guilty for spending the money, but I'm sure I'll eventually get over that. :)
Oh, and I found a ren faire in Oklahoma!

A friend showed me this. No granted, I don't know why I didn't think of them having something like that at the Castle before... but still, tis cool. Not much closer to me than the one in Dallas, but maybe it's less expensive. I'll have to talk to David and see if we can go. :)
Oh, and I'm apparently going to be trying to get active in the SCA again. After all, I've been here two years and will likely be here two more. This isn't a "temporary" situation any longer. Might as well make the most of it.
