So... yeah. Unemployed. Not the only one. Parted on relatively good terms. I am now joining an elite cadre of game design superheroes who've been laid off by WotC, and there are some prestigious names on that list, so I shouldn't feel all that bad. Of course, none of them are paying me money, so I don't feel all that great, either. I've got some severence, and I'm going to be looking for work. I don't plan to move, at least not at this point. For one, I like it here. For two, my kids' dad is here, and he can't move this time. The army has this thing called AWOL that they reserve just for active duty servicemen who take it upon themselves to suddenly relocate, and that would be bad. At the same time, I don't think I can support myself and my kids here by freelancing. I could be wrong, but... well, it's a hell of a lot more expensive here than Oklahoma, that's for sure.

As it stands, if anyone knows of either a) freelance writing or editing they need done after the first of the year (I have an assignment I need to finish up before Christmas, which should be far easier now) or b) a job in the Seattle area doing writing and/or editing, please let me know. Doesn't need to be game-industry related, though I'd not turn down one in that realm. I'm willing to pay a finders' fee in terms of a kiss/hug and the baked goods of your choice. :)

EDIT: Oh, and to add insult to injury, I am disinvited to the holiday party, and so have purchased a pretty dress for no reason. I guess I have to come up with a reason now. Bah.

They suck.

That is all.

Oh, except that on the misery-loves-company principle I believe [livejournal.com profile] wiredferret is also jobhunting in the Seattle area (Washington, anyway). She is a technical writer. I will introduce you and you never know!

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Oh hon, I'm so sorry *hug* That totally sucks! I know how much you were enjoying work there.

I'm sure you'll land on your feet though and end up with a better job. You'll be in my thoughts though.

Son of a bitch. That sucks rocks, Michelle. I know your pain, though I'm damned glad that I got to move home before White Wolf axed me.

Their loss.

EDIT: Oh, and to add insult to injury, I am disinvited to the holiday party

Imagine if, on the years when they lay off dozens if not hundreds, all the victims showing up and completely trashing the place? And by "imagine" I mean "fantasize."

Pramas and I attended the holiday party the year they threw the party *before* announcing the layoffs. Everyone knew layoffs were coming, so it was a pretty pathetic thing, with everyone roaming around this big party held at the EMP (for god knows how many thousands of dollars), looking at each other and wondering who wasn't going to be there in a couple of weeks.

Pretty crappy party.

Then again, WotC has been known to throw a freakin' ice cream party the day after layoffs, to cheer the remaining employees. Yes, they are that shallow...

EDIT: Oh, and to add insult to injury, I am disinvited to the holiday party,

See, now, that's just /tacky/ on their part.

Sympathies, lady. I wish I could offer productive or helpful advice, but all I can do is wish kidney stones upon the Neanderthals that laid you off.

You have my sympathies, Michelle. I'm familiar with this particular suckage. It does, indeed, suck.

Damn. That's horrible. Excessivly horrible, with the timing and the party thing and your moving to Seattle.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you bounce back.

Will reconsider my Saturday plans, if you're still thinking of a trip South.

I would like to see you and talk for a bit, but I'm not dependant on Saturday to do it. Email me, if you will... maybe we can meetup after your work one evening next week, or I could make a drive out and finally see your house, or something along those lines. Time is now something I have in abundance.

Man, those people need a serious trip to a little place Daki and I have been working on called Fist City. We may even incorporate Sledgehammer Slums as well.

I get layoffs, really, I do, but no Party? Dirty, Dirty fornicators and sodomites all of them. I hope they choke on ham puffs, try to wash it down with overproof rum and then wind up getting lit on fire by the candle-lit centerpieces.

Here's hoping in 2006 they regret losing you, big time.

Date: 2005-12-02 03:43 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] winterhawk.livejournal.com
Oh, that sucks. :( I'm so sorry, and hopefully you'll find something good soon. Lots of companies start hiring right after the first of the year.

Date: 2005-12-02 03:54 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] elissa-carey.livejournal.com
Agreed. (But it really stinks to have WotC lay off people right before the holidays... and you with kids. Grrr.)

Michelle, if you haven't talked yet with Aaron Acevedo, I think now's a good time. He can help hook you up with freelance assignments, at least, unless or until you find something more substantial and regular.

My condolences to you and the others who were cut, Michelle. I hope you manage to have happy holidays despite all this. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

Oh honey, I'm so sorry. What a crummy way for them to handle things. And disinviting you from the Christmas party? That's just... yeah. Crummy and a half. Bastards.

Good luck. I wish I knew of something to throw your way, but aside from this, I've got nothing.

Let me know if there's anything I can do, yeah?

Oh, no!

I'm so sorry, Michelle. If there's anything Janet or I can do to help, please let us know.

Hang in there.

So sorry to hear about the layoff. *hug* Unfortunately I'm not surprised. Almost nothing that I discussed with the various companies I talked with at GenCon came to fruition, and the work I did get is getting cut back because of poor showing in the industry. The gaming industry economy seems to be fairly depressed at the moment from what I've been seeing. Needless to say, I'm looking at other options myself.

I know you, though. You're industrious. You'll find something to do, and it'll likely be even better than what you were doing.
