I don't want to watch Buffy by myself. It's not that it's scary (by and large it isn't, though there is some creep factor there in some episodes), it's not that I don't like it.... it's just that it seems to me that what's good about it is best shared with people with whom one can natter about it during/immediately after the viewing, and what's bad about it is more obvious without others around.

I'd like to see more of it, but I'm not doing it on my own. Friends, should I visit you, I'm happy to steal your Buffy DVDs and watch them with you. I ain't doin' it on my own, though. Time to send this puppy back.

Definitely understand ... I missed a bunch of shows in my late teens/early 20s, 'cause I was being such a social butterfly. Never saw much of programs like Star Trek: Next Generation or Cheers, etc.

I don't think Buffy and Firefly can be compared that much, though -- they're different animals. Sure, I can see a few things that carry over (Whedon-style dialogue, etc.), but I don't think he was trying to "say the same things" with both shows.

Oh, not at all. It's much more like finding a novel you like by a certain author, then discovering he wrote all these other things and going back to read some of his earlier work.

Okay, I get that, but I am not sure it was "rougher," at least not to my mind ... in some ways, I found Firefly to be rougher, because he was trying new things ... perhaps things he wasn't as comfortable with. Definitely he had his writing process down to a smoother science then, but the whole sci-fi genre was a bit different for him, I think, and working with such a diverse (I don't mean racially, but more in terms of character traits and such) cast.

Hmm, and didn't he write the script to Alien: Resurrection? THAT was a stinker!
