I don't want to watch Buffy by myself. It's not that it's scary (by and large it isn't, though there is some creep factor there in some episodes), it's not that I don't like it.... it's just that it seems to me that what's good about it is best shared with people with whom one can natter about it during/immediately after the viewing, and what's bad about it is more obvious without others around.

I'd like to see more of it, but I'm not doing it on my own. Friends, should I visit you, I'm happy to steal your Buffy DVDs and watch them with you. I ain't doin' it on my own, though. Time to send this puppy back.

Buffy, Angel, Alias and other wacky genre shows are always better with friends, I've noticed. That's why you give them away as gifts, converting unsuspecting vic... er ... friends and gaining folks to watch with.

I take it this means you didn't watch the show when it originally aired?

I loved the experience. Well, after about Season 5 or so, it kind of started going downhill, but the first three or four seasons rocked.

I'd be happy to watch them ... I only have Season 3 with me here, though. I do own Seasons 1 and 2, but they are still packed away in a box at my dad's house ... 3,000 miles away.

I do have Forever Knight Season 1 here, though!

I think you're right about that.

I never really got into Buffy. My wife is addicted to reruns of "Charmed," but mercifully watches them when I am not around.

"Heroes," on the other hand, was a good series. I'm looking forward to season 2 so I can continue to follow the characters.

I'd invite you over to share addictions, but the commute would be horrendous.

One day, I shall have a laptop, and then we could watch Buffy together via AIM! ;)

(Honestly, except for a few episodes which are simply too creepy for me, I'm pretty much always up for some good Buffy watching. ;) )

Mind you, I completely understand about deciding you're just not going to ever watch something. I've had a few movies which sat here for several weeks and finally I went, "Y'know? Forget it. I'm just not up for watching this. Time to get something else that will make me happy."

So far it's a decision I've never regretted.

No, I didn't. During those years, I had either had a) babies to deal with, b) no cable due to expense, or c) cable that didn't have a channel that Buffy aired on. Choose any of these conditions, consecutive or concurrent, and apply at will. By the time the small-town Oklahoma cable company did have whatever network it was on toward the end of its run, it was toward the end of its run and I was never tempted to jump in at that point -- also, living with my folks at the time, and David and I (the only person who would likely watch it with me) barely speaking.... yeah. Not a recipe for Buffy-love. :)

My ex liked Charmed. My dad loves it, of all things, and he's not what you'd normally consider a fan of fantasy. I'd say it was just about the women, but he can tell me whole storylines and everything. It's kinda cute. :)

I would be happy to watch Buffy with you. There are movies I've decided I'm just never going to watch. Se7en, for example, or Silence of the Lambs, or a whole ton of stuff like that. It's rare for me to rent something and not watch it, but I think in this case that'll have to do.

Indeed.

In watching Buffy, I can see the seeds of a lot of what I liked in Firefly. It's a lot rougher, but it's there. Sadly, I only made it through the first season of Buffy, which is not the best place to stop, but that's the way it is.

Oh yeah, I have a ton of those, including the ones you mentioned.

But even things like - I just recently sent back Children Of Men unwatched, because I'm just not in the headspace for it. I am certain I will watch it one of these days, but at the moment, I'm just not up for it. So I sent it back, and I'll get it some other time. :)

Definitely understand ... I missed a bunch of shows in my late teens/early 20s, 'cause I was being such a social butterfly. Never saw much of programs like Star Trek: Next Generation or Cheers, etc.

I don't think Buffy and Firefly can be compared that much, though -- they're different animals. Sure, I can see a few things that carry over (Whedon-style dialogue, etc.), but I don't think he was trying to "say the same things" with both shows.

Definitely worth watching, though ... yeah, don't be in a down mood when you do!

Oh, not at all. It's much more like finding a novel you like by a certain author, then discovering he wrote all these other things and going back to read some of his earlier work.

Okay, I get that, but I am not sure it was "rougher," at least not to my mind ... in some ways, I found Firefly to be rougher, because he was trying new things ... perhaps things he wasn't as comfortable with. Definitely he had his writing process down to a smoother science then, but the whole sci-fi genre was a bit different for him, I think, and working with such a diverse (I don't mean racially, but more in terms of character traits and such) cast.

Hmm, and didn't he write the script to Alien: Resurrection? THAT was a stinker!
