SCENE: The three of us watching women's curling on TV.

Will: Curling is weird.

Al: Curling is awesome.

Will: But it's weird!

Al: I'm not saying it's not weird, but it's still awesome.

Me: It was invented in Scotland about 600 years ago, you know.

Al: Back in feudal Scotland, right?

Will: Sliding stones across ice? You wouldn't think they would have been that creative.

Al: They throw big logs! You really think that they wouldn't slide stones?

Me: *laughing* You've got a point.

Hahaha! Al for the win! You can remind him that the Scots also invented knocking a tiny ball into a tiny hole way off in the distance.

[livejournal.com profile] ineti and I got caught up watching women's curling last night. It's very weird, but oddly compelling.

Hey, now, curling is a brilliant sport. It requires both skill on the ice itself, and strategy and tactics.

I guess to some it is weird.

And citizens of the U.S.A. seem to re-"discover" curling every 4 years at the Winter Olympics. Wonder why this is? :)

Absolutely. But it's also people sliding big rocks across long patches of ice, with other people using brooms to do... well, I'm not sure what it is they accomplish, but I can tell it does something. Rocks and brooms on ice. There is a slight element of the absurd there, you know.

As for why, in part you can thank NBC, who's devoting all their spare time on MSNBC to in-depth curling coverage. Whereas in past iterations it got almost no coverage, now it gets a station practially all to itself, much as they're doing with hockey and CNBC.

And don't worry, we're taking my curling-admiring child to a mini-camp next weekend to feed his curiosity and possibly addiction. Dinna fret. :)

I guess I can see why the image would seem to be so absurd...but that said, curling is really a brilliant game to both watch and play.

Had no idea that MSNBC was devoting itself to curling. This is a good thing. :)

Ooh, a curling mini-camp? Excellent! :)

If I was a sport I would be Curling.

Ha! Funny and insightful!

Now I want a Scotch Ale. (One of the local ones has a caber tosser on the bottle.)
